today i held in my hand ice that may have been up to 20 million years old, which multiple countries fight over for the chance to study.
so i ate it.

i've now spent an entire week working in the organic geochemistry group at the research center for ocean margins (RCOM) located at the university of bremen. i'm working with pamela rossel a phd student under prof. kai-uwe hinrichs. we're studying the natural degredation of intact polar membrane lipids (IPLs)in deep sediments using HPLC-MS. very little is known about this, everyone claims they degrade "quickly" but there are no temporal constraints on "quickly." to do this, we're incubating a mixture of IPL standards and a crushed bacterial mat from the black sea in sediments collected from a variety of places in the oceans. the samples are prepared in an anoxic environment (aka a glove box at the max planck institute for microbiology), and stored at either 5 or 40 degrees celsius. samples are removed, extracted, and analyzed according to a predetermined time series. we're hoping to see how fast they degrade. in addition, half the samples were autoclaved (before adding the IPL mixture) to see if the degradation is biologic or chemical. all in all, it seems pretty spiffy and i'm excited.
pamela is also great to work with. she's originally from chile, where she did her bachelors and masters degrees. her and the other people in our group are really fun to hang out with. there's another summer student, jeff, who is also working in kai's group. all together, it's a pretty groovy bunch.
the above picture is of one of the terraces in the marum building where i work. this one is covered in blue broken glass which is super-pretty but not practical for use. luckily, there are many other terraces that we can go out on when the weather's nice. this past week, it's been uncomfortabley warm (33 degrees yesterday, ugh). nothing is air-conditioned. in fact, our GC-MS wasn't working properly because the instrument room is far too warm. luckily the HPLC seems fine.
well, off to dinner with the other summer students! |

last night we went to the center of town to watch the germany-italy world cup game with all the other germans. the square was filled and it was very exciting, until the last two minutes of overtime when italy managed to score two points and win. i'm probably biased, but during the game it seemed like germany was the better of the two teams so the final result was a bit dissapointing. i have a few videos i took in the main square of the crowd. watching it with everyone definately made the game more exciting, but football is a fairly interesting sport to watch anyway.
here's a video of the crowd last night. it was groovy. more to come later.
i started working at RCOM yesterday. also more on this later. now i'm off to autoclave some samples. wheee!
edit: the people in the above picture are fellow summer students tom, pam, jeff, and alyssa. we couldn't bring any beer into the area where everyone was watching the game (they were selling beer inside), so we were forced to drink it all very quickly in order to catch the second half. |

my cat found a flying squirrel in my bathroom today. it was really neat looking, until it crawled up into the light and got stuck. all in all, we eventually got it out and saved it from being ruthlessly slaughtered by the cats. |

rush is over. yay. it seems to have gone fairly well this year. a fair number of the frosh are pretty cool. also, senior haus is almost full, which although strange, is good for our relationship with the administrators.
hooray. |

spiffy site. it lets you track recent earthquakes that occur around the world. or maybe i'm just silly for liking this. either way, it's a whole lot of fun. (and makes me happy that i don't live in an earthquake prone zone)

the past week or so has been awesomely awesome. i've felt better than i have about things in general than i have in a while.
i spent the last week near park falls, wisconsin at a resort on an amazing set of lakes. we went canoeing on the flambeau, and saw a bear swimming across the river in front of us. i went fishing a whole bunch, catching some walleye, bass, and the usual arseload of panfish. the wildlife was spectacular, as always. baby eagles in nests, a family of loons we could hear all hours of the day/night, deer everywhere, bats, etc. it was really nice.
soon after i got back to eau claire i ran off to the cities to go to a concert with fish/ward/ingrid. but not really ingrid, because macalester is stupid and doesn't let employees be seen with students. so she wasn't there with fish and ward, but she was there with me. we went to see oakenfold which was awesome. the only non-awesome part was the three dj's who preceeded him and played for 4 hours. this means that by the time oakenfold was on, fish and i were ready to collape from dancing our asses off. also the drunk people who had trouble standing were a bit of a pain on the dancefloor. some chick tried to sell fish and me E, which i found amusing. partially because the music was so loud, so she had to repeat her question three times before i even understood her. at that point she was trying to walk away from us. i also discovered i can dance with glowsticks, which means we need to get some for the party during rush (as if we weren't going to do that), and i hope ben/tr/michelle/mad/etc will dance with glowsticks like they do fire poi. that will rock. speaking of dance party in the courtyard, we need to figure out how we can logistically make that happen... oh well, hopefully it works out.
i feel so removed from things at mit. this is good and bad. it seems like i can't have as much input (which is quite realistic, considering the almost 1500 miles that seperates me and the people planning for rush). i'm just worried that rush will fail and senior haus won't have frosh and it will all be my fault because i'm rush chair. i know this isn't completely realistic, since somehow the other events i've helped with have been amazing successes (well, delihaus mostly), but i'm still worried. i'm also hoping i find motivation when it comes to classes. most of my classes were so unmotivating last term. it really seems a waste to be paying tuition for a class i end up hating. oh well, i think i'll take a course 12 class to see how i like it. rocks are fun, right kiddos?
also: a seemingly random question, but if you could go anywhere in the world where would you want to go? this would be at any time of year you wanted, and do anything you want. (places like tibet are barred, because you can't actually travel there, unless you're super-special. if you are super-special, you're awesome.) places i'd like to go: - new zealand/other south pacific islands - nepal - the amazon [i've always wanted to see the rainforest] - mt. kilimanjaro/tanzania/african rainforest [did you know that mt. kilimanjaro is acting geologically similar to mt. st. helens before it burst open?]
anyway, i'm out. |
